# Evenly > Evenly is a free web app for shared payments in India where everyone pays their own share by UPI: splitting a bill at the table, getting paid back after covering one, collecting for a gift or a cause, and letting a restaurant's tables pay separately. There's no app to install and no sign-up. Evenly runs in the browser on phones and desktop at https://tryevenly.com. Money never passes through Evenly. Each person pays from their own UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or any other) directly to whoever is owed. ## Four ways to use it ### Pay together, right now For a group at a restaurant or shop who want to pay separately, so nobody fronts the bill. Start at https://tryevenly.com/new/now, scan the shop's UPI QR (or type its UPI ID), and enter the total and who's in. The total splits evenly in whole rupees, and any share can be set by hand. Then show one QR per person on your phone, or send one link to the group. Each person pays the shop their own share. ### Get paid back For when you already paid. Start at https://tryevenly.com/new/later with your own UPI ID. Friends open one link, pick their name and pay you their share. ### Collect for a cause For a farewell gift, a birthday, a festival, a society event or a relief fund. Start at https://tryevenly.com/new/cause. The organiser sets what it's for, an optional goal, and whether people give any amount (suggested ₹101, ₹251, ₹501 or ₹1,001) or the same amount each. The money goes to the organiser, or straight to the cause's own UPI ID. Share one link, or show a QR at the event. The organiser records each gift as the money arrives and can post an update with the total. ### Shops and restaurants For a shop's own counter phone, at https://tryevenly.com/business. Save the shop's UPI ID once. When a table wants to pay separately, enter the bill and how many are paying, and the phone shows one QR per guest. The shop can also print a table poster: diners scan it with their phone camera, split the bill among themselves, and each pays the shop their share. ## Key facts - Price: free. Evenly charges no fees and never holds money. - Accounts: none. Splits and collections are saved only in the browser that created them. - Privacy: a link carries the bill or collection in the URL fragment (the part after #), which browsers don't send to servers. - Payment status: Evenly can't see bank or UPI payments. The person collecting ticks people off, and payers can send a "paid" message on WhatsApp in one tap. Each UPI payment carries a note with the payer's name and what it was for. - Works with any UPI app. On Android it opens the UPI app chooser. On iPhone it shows GPay, PhonePe and Paytm buttons. On desktop it shows a QR to scan with a phone. - Limits: each share must be at least ₹1, and a split can have up to 30 people. Each person's own bank UPI limits apply. ## FAQ ### Is Evenly a payment app or a wallet? No. Evenly works out who owes what and creates standard UPI payment links and QR codes. The payment itself happens in the payer's own UPI app, between their bank and the receiver's. ### How is Evenly different from Splitwise? Splitwise keeps a running record of who owes whom, to settle later. Evenly is for paying right away: each person pays their share straight to the restaurant, or back to whoever paid, so there's no balance left to settle. ### Do my friends need to install anything? No. They need only a UPI app they already have. Links open as normal web pages. ### Can I split a restaurant bill so nobody pays the whole amount? Yes. Choose "Paying together, right now", scan the restaurant's UPI QR, and each person pays their share directly to the restaurant from their own phone. ### Can a restaurant offer this to its customers? Yes. The restaurant saves its UPI ID on its counter phone at https://tryevenly.com/business. It can show one QR per guest at the counter, or print a table poster so diners split the bill themselves. ### Can I collect money for a gift or a cause? Yes. Start a collection at https://tryevenly.com/new/cause, share one link, and people chip in from their own UPI app, to you or straight to the cause. ## Links - [Start something](https://tryevenly.com/new): pick one of the four ways - [For shops and restaurants](https://tryevenly.com/business): counter QRs and a table poster - [Source code](https://github.com/iBvishal/evenly-web): the open-source web app
